The thirteenth annual Scandinavian Film Festival L.A. comes to the Writers Guild Theater, Beverly Hills, and spans two weekends: January 7-8, 14-15, 2011. The yearly showcase of Nordic films and filmmakers, launched in 2000, screens the year’s Scandinavian films submitted to the Academy as nominees for Best Foreign-Language Film as well as other current feature, documentary, and short films

Through drastic events, Hannes realizes that he has to adjust his life in order to help someone he loves. Volcano is a love story of someone who has to deal with the choices of the past and the difficulties of the present in order to embrace the future.

With no-one but each other for company, the barren wilderness becomes a place of adventure, disaster and discovery as both men find themselves at crossroads in their lives.

Couple Árni and Lóa formed the band in late 2005, to record a Christmas present song for their friends. Their friends loved what they heard, and the track started making the rounds in Reykjavík. That summer, the two performed their début concert, in a cave in the Faeroe Islands. Their next gig saw them whipping an unwitting crowd into a frenzy at Iceland Airwaves 2006 with the help of two new members, Árni Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (you might know him from the very excellent múm). Icelandic American Association held the 17th of June Celebration at Nansen Field on June 25th.
Icelandic Hot Dogs were gobbled up and a community table full of treats was enjoyed. After the feast we went outside to use up all the build up energy. The kids busted up a Pinata full of candy entered gunny sack race and in the end we had tug of war for kids of all ages. Thank you to all of you that came and made this day such a success.

Icelandic Independence Day Celebration 2011

We may not have a parade down Laugarvegur or concert at Arnarhóll, but "little Iceland" in Los Angeles sure knows how to celebrate 17th of June!!

Come and celebrate our national holiday on the 25th of June.

Be prepared to sing Hæ Hó Jibbí Jei, participate in Icelandic national sports such as Reipitog, Pokahlaup, and Icelandic hotdog eating!

What do you need to bring: Something yummy you would like to share with others, camera to capture the smiles of your loved ones and yourself in a festive mood.

We will have soft drinks, vine, beer and water for sale for small fee, community table with homemade goods and did we mention ICELANDIC HOT DOGS!!

The event starts at 2 pm. Single admission is $20 and $35 for a family.

If you wish to pay the admission fee by credit card you can do so here below and pay via Paypal. Just remember to print out the receipt and bring it to the celebration.

FM Belfast Sign To Morr Music + Tour Dates
Germany's Morr Music have signed up FM Belfast whose energetic live performances and debut album 'How To Make Friends' caused euphoric reactions around the world. FM Belfast will release a new album called 'Don't Want To Sleep' on Morr Music (coming up in June).

Apply Now For Chamber Music Festival
The Icelandic Chamber Music Festival, which this year runs between the 3rd - 13th of August, was originally initiated by young Icelandic musicians. It offers music courses for people of a wide age range, as well as an exciting concert series. The application deadline for attending the courses is 1st of April 2011.

Third Party Certification of the Icelandic Cod Fisheries
Iceland's cod fisheries have now been certified by a third party. The scheme is an FAO-ISO based certification for responsible fisheries management and created for the benefit of future generations. The announcement was made this week that theIcelandic cod fisheries received certification according to the FAO-ISO based Iceland Responsible Fisheries Management Certification Programme. This is an important, and historic milestone for Iceland’s seafood industry and confirmation that the fishery for the nation’s most valuable fish stock is well managed. Our annual Jólaball (Christmas Dance) was held Sunday December 5th at Nansen Field.

We had such a fun celebrating with all of you.

Thank you so much to Santa (Jólasvein) who came all the way from Esjan with some treats for the kids. Also Veigar Margeirsson played the piano while everybody else tried their best to remember the lyrics to some of those Icelandic Christmas songs, with mixed results...:)

We also got to meet Unnur and Ása who are Icelandic entrepreneurs, they showcased their products and we encourage all of you to visit them by checking out their websites.

Ja Ja Ja May Show!

April’s Ja Ja Ja party was eventful to say the least. The outfall from the Icelandic volcano prevented two scheduled bands from attending, but Finnish heroes Thunderstone saved the day by not only making the show but playing for free. Big thanks to them and to all who came to party. Hopefully no such natural disasters will afflict the May night, which looks set to be a dynamite explosion all of its own.

Seabear & Sóley May Tour!

Iceland's Seabear are having a busy time of it lately, what with the release of their wonderful We Made A Fire album and some excellent shows in the USA, Iceland, Europe and beyond. Their touring continues this month with a string of shows across Europe, including Paris, London, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Trúbatrix To Play The UK!

All female music collective Trúbatrix are coming to the UK in May to play two special gigs in London and Brighton. Trúbatrix are a collective of Icelandic female artists who organize concerts, release records and promote original Icelandic female artists to the world. The Trúbatrix girls took 2009 by storm by releasing an album (Taka 1), touring around Iceland and organizing successful showcases at the Iceland Airwaves Festival - and the Reykjavík Round-Up Festival.

Thorrablot 2010 was a HUGE success!!
Around 130 people drove from all over to Newport Beach and celebrated Þorri with some Icelandic food and entertainment.
We hope you all had as much fun as we did, thank you to all of you that came to party!!

IAA committee: Linda, Bára, Biggi and Palli are to thank for this great evening.
Linda handled everything from: Treasurer, organizer, IAA communication and sending out and designing the fliers and pretty much putting this whole thing together.
Bára did a fabulous job at getting the food to at a GREAT price and wow it was some good food!!
Biggi Gunn handled the music and had the right connections in Iceland and was able to get Geir Ólafs and Grétar Örvarsson, Villa and other great talent from Iceland. He is also to thank for finding the Newport location

Veigar Margeirsson og eiginkona hans, Sigríður Ragna, hafa sett á fót söfnunarsíðu fyrir bágstadda Íslendinga. Hér eru þau með börnum sínum í Los Angeles.
„Íslendingar í útlöndum hafa miklar áhyggjur af ástandinu heima og við, sem búsett erum erlendis, fylgjumst mjög vel með því sem er að gerast," segir Veigar Margeirsson, kvikmyndatónskáld í Los Angeles. Hann hefur ásamt eiginkonu sinni, Sigríði Rögnu Jónasdóttur, stofnað söfnunarsíðuna silverliningcharity.org þar sem fólki gefst kostur á að gefa peninga til styrktar bágstöddum Íslendingum. Áætlað er að 1. desember verði í fyrsta sinn gefnir peningar úr sjóðnum en Veigar segir þau hjónin vilja leggja sitt af mörkum til að aðstoða fólk til að halda gleðileg jól. „Við lesum auðvitað fréttir af Íslendingum og aukinni sókn eftir aðstoð ýmissa hjálparsamtaka. Það er skelfilegt að hugsa til þess að sumar íslenskar fjölskyldur eru nánast komnar undir fátæktarmörk."
Veigar hefur um árabil verið búsettur í Bandaríkjunum og samið tónlist við auglýsingar, stiklur og annað tengt afþreyingariðnaðinum. Hann samdi meðal annars tónlistina við íslensku spennumyndina Köld slóð þar sem Anita Briem fór með eitt aðalhlutverkanna. Hann hefur varið litlum tíma á Íslandi eftir að kreppan skall á. „Hér er auðvitað líka kreppa en fallið heima er svo hratt og gerist svo snöggt að þetta er varla sambærilegt," útskýrir Veigar og bætir því að margir Íslendingar sem búi í Bandaríkjunum hafi átt erfitt með að senda peninga heim. Heimasíðan geri því auðveldara um vik. „Fólk má ekki gleyma því að vegna stöðu krónunnar þá getur erlend mynt gert kraftaverk, það þarf ekki margar evrur eða dollara til að ná góðri upphæð," útskýrir Veigar.
Hann segir að Íslendingar megi aldrei halda að fólkið í útlöndum hafi gleymt þeim. Síður en svo. „Við höfum mjög sterkar taugar til Íslands og erum hálfgerðir þjóðernissinnar. Það hefur síður en svo minnkað eftir kreppuna," segir Veigar og tekur fram að auðvitað sé Íslendingum heima frjálst að gefa til söfnunarinnar. Dear Friend of Iceland,
My name is Sirry Jonasdottir and I live in Los Angeles with my family. I want to tell you about a charity I recently formed with my husband, Veigar.
The Silver Lining Charity is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to help impoverished families in Iceland. We urge all Icelanders abroad, and all friends of Iceland to come to the aid of families who now face extreme difficulties caused by the recent financial collapse. Those suffering the most are innocent bystanders in the economic recession; they must struggle with little or no income, and no employment. A staggering number of previously middle-class families now face poverty and struggle just to put food on the table.
There are organizations in Iceland who feed the needy, but they are overwhelmed by the current demand. It is our mission to raise funds to support these organizations, so every family that needs help, gets it. Our first contribution will take place at the beginning of December this year.
Fundraising in Iceland rarely includes those overseas because of the cost and inconvenience of transferring funds. In this time of difficulty and great uncertainty in Iceland, we feel it is important for us that are abroad to help our friends in need. We also want to mention that the current exchange rate is very favorable to the US dollar – a small amount goes a long way.

AIC 2009 Round Up
Iceland Music Export are pleased to report that the third edition of their You Are In Control music and creative media conference was a resounding success. The event, which took place on the 23rd & 24th September in Reykjavik, offered attendees a mix of inspirational keynote speeches, panels and workshops on a wide range of topics centered around the theme of the digital revolution within the creative industries (particularly music).

Iceland Airwaves - More Tickets, Artists Added
As the 11th Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, which will be held 14-18th October, looms ever closer, the organisers are still unleashing news and updates. In recent newsletters, the festival has announced an additional 56 local acts to the already brimming line up, bringing the total up to around 100. And if you think you might have seen them all before, be aware that no less than 25 bands will be making their debut Airwaves appearance this year!

Ólöf Arnalds Releases Début Album In UK
Currently back in the USA for her 5th run of shows in the last 12 months, Icelandic folk chanteuse Ólöf Arnalds has been a prominent figure in her native music scene for several years as a member of múm. However it is Ólöf's solo debut, Við og Við that continues to garner widespread acclaim, and the album will finally be released in the UK for the first time by One Little Indian on November 16th, 2009.

Hjaltalín/Helgi Jónsson Tour
Fans of talented pop outfit Hjaltalín and singer-songwriter/trombonist Helgi Jónsson will be happy to learn that they are both heading out on tour next month. Tight, dark and static, THE BLOOD features some serious sonic attention from Bedroom Communityexperimentalist Ben Frost. From the beautiful drum n’ feedback start through the up-beat and almost chirpy Repticon, to the relaxing but dim Campo Viejo, 2004 and ending with the uneasy but cheerful Random Acts of Sodomy, THE BLOOD is harder, faster and arguably better than their famous first album. BLOOD was released 03.08 in Europe, and 04.09 in the US.

The sound of five-piece rockersSudden Weather Change has been likened to Sonic Youth, Pavement, Polvo and countless other 90's alt-rock bands from the U.S. Stop! Handgrenade... is their first full length album and contains 13 juicy, guitar heavy songs. Stop! Handgrenade... has recieved good reviews since it's release and the album's first single, St. Peters Day, has been getting good radio airplay in Iceland. The album will be released on the 2nd of October in Europe, and the 27th in US.

Our Independence Day celebration was a huge success. We had about 100 people show up, adults and children, and there were a lot of new faces among our regulars.

We want to thank everyone that attended and big thanks to those who helped us throughout the day. The feeling was that this was a big family event and everyone pitched in.
